2009-2010  Workshop Series - Yoga and Pilates for Runners:  From Mat to Marathon
 Whether you are preparing for the London marathon, racing shorter distances or simply putting in plenty of miles for fun, don’t miss this 5-workshop series for runners.  Although designed to supplement and complement a typical marathon training programme, non-racers and casual joggers will benefit, too.  Discover how yoga can help your running flourish and get you to the finish line – or even just out the front door – in one healthy, happy piece.

Strong and Centred:  A Yoga & Pilates Foundation for Runners

Runners often turn to yoga or Pilates to counter the side effects and subtle imbalances created by their sport.  Prevention is, of course, a better approach.  Ideally we should be strong, supple and centre before we put the body through challenges of running – particularly before undertaking the miles required for a marathon.

This workshop focuses on the way Pilates and yoga can be used together for physical and spiritual wellness, addressing the differences and similarities between the two. Joseph Pilates was himself a student of yoga and Zen and the two may have more in common than you think: Sets of principles, systematic use of breath, engagement of the inner body and the relationship between the so-called  “core” and yoga’s Bandhas or locks.  Find out how, paradoxically, core work can make you more flexible, and stretching can make you stronger.  You’ll take away the key elements of a short but highly effective practice that should become an essential part of your running week.
