Pilates mat work offers a true treasure trove to runners. Developed in the 20th century by Joseph Pilates, this mind-body practice improves core strength and posture while balancing muscular effort for smooth, energy-efficient strides. For runners the benefits are numerous. Core strength can be transmitted as power through the limbs. Flexibility and endurance improve as muscular effort is spread appropriately, preventing over-compensation and tightness. Common running injuries are prevented through better alignment, stable but mobile joints, and improved balance, coordination and body awareness.
In this workshop we’ll cover 10 principles of the practice, discover the Pilates ‘Powerhouse’ group of muscles, and learn how to breathe well while engaging all 4 layers of abdominal muscles. You’ll get to try a practice specifically modified for runners – not only strengthening core and back, but ensuring correct recruitment of glutes and hamstrings and improving balance and flexibility in some functional, ‘standing’ exercises that mimic the action of running.
This workshop promises to be educational, dynamic and open to all.
